READING and WRITING
We are practicing our reading fluency with a short reader's theater and starting an exciting time capsule project. Each student will create a time capsule of information from second grade. We will need parents help in writing a letter that will be sent home in an envelope to you. All students will make goals for their immediate future and record their favorite memories about second grade. The Time Capsules will be sent home and they will hide or "lock away" in a safe place until 5th grade! Today was our last time for Life Journals. They will be coming home for you to keep.
SPELLING
We will focus on dipthong words (ou and ow as /ou/ sound). Your child will bring home one list on Monday. We will assess on Friday. This will be our last spelling test.
MATH
We are moving into division this week. The goal of second grade division is for the kids to understand and model how division works, not to memorize facts. We will work with separating the 'whole' into groups and finding out how many will be in each group. From using hula hoops to popcorn, this will be a memorable experience. :)
SOCIAL STUDIES
To continue our discussion on how things were in the "old days", we will talk about the progress made in transportation, communication and recreation. The class will fill out a chart and illustrate each timeline with examples we discussed in class. We will tie in a discussion of how our basic needs look different now compared to 20, 50, or 100 years ago.
