SPELLING
Students will take a pretest on Friday and will receive a list specific to their needs. We will work with those words during the week, and they will have an assessment on Friday. This week, all words have a short vowel sound. We are also introducing the "ck" pattern and the "ea" vowel blend. The assessment will include 5 of these words and 5 surprise words. Students will bring home a list on Monday for practice at home.
GRAMMAR
This week, we will study verbs with two of our favorite superheros, Verb and Verbette!
WRITING
Because of Education: Go Get It! Week, we are focusing our writing lessons on the future. We will be brainstorming about our school, college, and career goals and will dream of the future. As we make our dream boards and write about our plans, we will look forward with anticipation of great success!
READING
We will be introducing our fourth component of Daily 5: Word Work. During this time, students will have the opportunity to work with and manipulate their spelling words using materials other than a pencil and paper. For our reading skill focus, we will work to retell stories in a logical order using a "retell rope".
MATH
Our math knowledge of numbers and place value will continue with a study of number lines. We will be also looking at hundreds charts and looking for patterns that can be found! Homework will come home on Tuesday. We will also assess your child's knowledge of place value and number lines on Friday.
SCIENCE
To kick off our science unit, we will be learning about science safety rules and the scientific process. Students will discover that we are each scientists and will be conducting several experiments to practice their knowledge of safety and processes.
LIFE JOURNALS
Life Journals are always due on Friday! Students need to be writing about an event that has happened to them and attach an item or picture to the entry. All entries should be at least 1 page in length (skipping lines is okay) and should include the date.
EDUCATION: GO GET IT! WEEK
Please encourage your child to participate in this week's activities.
Monday: Give a Hoot Day: Wear your Caraway t-shirt
Tuesday: Dress for Success: Dress up for the career of your choice
Wednesday: Step up for Education: Wear your tennis shoes

BIRTHDAYS
Thank you to all of you for my wonderful birthday cards and class gift! I really appreciate it!
We do celebrate student birthdays in the room. Due to the rules regarding foods of minimal nutritional value and various allergies, sending in treats is difficult. However, if you would like to send in a small item (pencil, erasers, etc) for your child to share for their classmates on their birthday, that is fine as well. . . but not definitely not necessary.
