October 1-5
WRITING
This week, we will continue our study of verbs. To apply this knowledge of "action words", we will be working on an action story using vivid verbs. We will work to develop a story with a clear beginning, middle, and end.
SPELLING
All words will be assessed on Friday. This week, our words will focus on beginning consonant blends.
READING
Daily 5 is almost fully launched! This week we will be practicing the last component: Listen to Reading. Students will have the opportunity to listen books on the computer through TumbleBooks, BookFlix, and A-Z Reading. We will also complete an author study of Kevin Henkes. We will read several of his books and focus on similarities and differences in theme and illustrations.
MATH
We are digging into addition by studying various addition strategies. This week, we will focus on the count-on strategy, flip-flop/turnaround facts, and doubles. We will end the week with learning about combinations of ten. Although this unit may seem elementary, it is essential that your child master the strategies of addition to aid in their future success. Please be practicing addition facts (to 18) at home.
SCIENCE
This week, we will become scientists that classify!Students will have the opportunity to sort different materials and classify them using their own system. We will also learn about the different forms of matter and how to classify their characteristics.
