Feb. 4-8

WRITING:
Using our powerful sensory language, we will unwrap a surprise this week!  Using our five senses, we will describe each step we go through to get to our surprise gift.  How does it look, feel, sound, taste, smell and make sure to include our anticipation and excitement.  We will work on showing our reader our experience with juicy language, instead of writing simple, overused words.

Our grammar lessons will tie into our reading using the adjectives of sensory language. We will work on spelling patterns of long u (-oo, -ew) and will have a spelling check on Friday.

READING:
We will use our sensory language that we learned last week to look through 'Poet Eyes" and understand poetry on a rhythmic level.  Through repetition, alliteration, fluency and tone, we will see how these aspects of a poem make it come alive!

MATH:
This week we will have a quick assessment on addition and then switch to 2 digit subtraction.  This concept can be a little trickier than addition for the students. Our slogan for subtraction is "More on top, no need to stop.  More on the floor, go next door to get 10 more. Numbers the same, zeros the game."  The addition slogan is "If you have 10 or more, carry next door. If you have 9 or less, let it rest."

SOCIAL STUDIES:
Timelines are a thing of the past!  We are starting a unit on environmental change and how we (humans) impact the environment around us.  The students will list pros and cons of living in certain regions of Texas, nation and world using natural resources, natural hazards and weather as some of their reasoning.  We will learn the difference between rural, suburban and urban living.  The week will end with each student picking a piece of nature and showing how human modification had an effect on the land.
