April 23rd-27th

WRITING
Our research projects are almost complete. This week we will get to present them and then do a self-evaluation where each child will reflect on what they liked and what they would improve on for their next project. Each child has blown me away with their hard work, excellent research skills and creative products they came up with. I am so proud of your kiddos!
We will work on compound words this week in grammar and will review our reading and writing benchmarks.

READING
Moving on from research we will venture into the cause and effect world. This can be a difficult concept for kids to understand. The cause is the 'why' an event happened and the effect is the 'what happened'. We will read some well known children's books that illustrate this concept and do some partner activities to show our understanding. This is a skill that can be easily practiced at home and I encourage you to do that with your child. This week I will begin reading with each child to assess their reading, comprehension, and fluency levels.

SPELLING
We will continue on r-controlled words (words -er, -ir and ur). Your child will bring home one list on Monday. We will assess on Friday.

MATH
We will be working on our speed of recall for our addition and subtraction facts before we venture into the repetitive addition and subtraction units (beginning level of multiplication and division). The national standard of 1-18 math facts is a 6 second recall and we are working hard on mastering that time. We will play team games, partner games, race against the clock games and quick assessments to build our stamina. At the end of the week, we will review all addition and subtraction quick facts.
We will also review our math benchmarks.

SCIENCE
Our Animal Adventure Day was great! The class really enjoyed seeing the animals we have been studying. We will continue with our animal investigation, but on a smaller level - all about insects. We will spend this week learning about the simple and metamorphic life cycles, how they meet their basic needs and how they survive. We will assess on animals and insects on Friday.
