WRITING & READING
We are finishing up our Pop Rock writing and it will soon be on display!
This week is the start of a two week unit on independent research. The class has been led through three research projects and it's time for the students to show off what they have learned on their own! The writing and reading will revolve around each student's animal they select to study. On their own, they will select an animal, set goals for their research, take notes from books, websites and encyclopedias. At the end of the week, each student will sort their facts to form categories of interest and prepare their content for their research paper and their bibliography.
Our grammar for this week will tie into our spelling unit on suffixes.
SPELLING
We will work on Suffixes (words that end with -ly, -ful, -er, -or, -less). Your child will bring home one list on Tuesday. We will assess on Friday.
MATH
We have covered length, capacity and are moving on to weight and area. Our focus will be to distinguish the difference between pounds and ounces (loaf of bread and slice of bread) along with kilograms and grams (bag of flour and large paper clip). We will touch on how to tell the area of an object using cubes. Our review will be on Thursday and we will assess on Friday for our measurement unit.
SCIENCE
We introduced our unit on animals last week and will continue to study animals this week. Our focus will continue to cover their examples, habitat, needs, life cycle and adaptations. We will briefly go through the food chain and discuss the importance of it. Each student will have an Animal Investigation Journal to fill out as we cover each type of animal (reptile, amphibian, bird, mammal, fish).
On Wednesday, we will have an in school field trip! Austin Nature Center will take over our afternoon and visit our classrooms to give us hands on lessons to go along with what we are learning in class.
