WRITING
We will make Mr. Potato Heads this week! With all our vocabulary we have learned this year we will design, create and describe each section of our potato (facial features, shoes, color, etc). Our descriptions will have to be specific in order for the class to choose which potato we are talking about.
READING
This week we will practice retelling stories in different ways. Our class will use retell ropes, story maps, story time lines and story paths to retell each story presented in class. Grammar will tie into reading as we learn about transition words to make our stories flow and create a time-order in our retelling.
SPELLING
We will work on making words plural (words that end in -y, -f, -lf, -fe, -rf). Your child will bring home TWO lists. One showing the singular form and the other showing the plural. We will assess on Friday. There will be no surprise words this week.
MATH
The geometry unit has come to an end. We will focus on length (how long), weight (how much mass), and capacity (how much something can hold). For length, we will start by using non standard units of measurement (paper clips, shoes, markers, etc). Then we will compare the difference inch, foot, yard, centimeter and meter. There will be class discussions on all the different ways to measure an object and the tools to use when measuring (ruler, scale, etc).
SCIENCE
Our unit on plants knowledge is growing! This week, we will have class plants to observe. Our focus this week will be centered on the function of plant parts and how each plant adapts to their environment to survive. We will continue to monitor our lima beans, grass seeds in soil and grass seeds in a sock and adding to that certain plants placed in sunlight and in a cabinet. The students will predict and infer what will happen to each plant when it does(not) have all its need met. To wrap up this week, we will make a shadow box of one plant and its environment.
**If you have boxes of any type that you want to donate, please have your child bring it to school by Thursday morning. Thanks!
